On the Floor
The Senate will not be in session.

The House is not in session.

Legislation
Funding for troops protecting our nation in Iraq and Afghanistan has officially been placed on hold while Democratic leaders try to secure enough Democratic votes to attach to the legislation a $108 billion global bailout for the International Monetary Fund (IMF) – a bailout that could line the pockets of terrorist regimes around the world, according to Democratic Rep. Brad Sherman (D-CA). In a letter to his colleagues earlier today, Rep. Sherman warned, “We face the very real possibility that some of the world’s worst regimes will benefit from the additional resources provided to the IMF, World Bank and other international institutions, unless the U.S. works vigilantly to deny this assistance.”

The State authorization legislation will likely be on the floor next Wednesday, June 10th. The problems we have with the bill include it will place a priority on examining how other countries restrict homosexual behavior, and work to overturn laws deemed as violating or restricting homosexual or transsexuals behavior. It will also force U.S. Foreign Service workers to go through sensitivity training on the issues of “sexual orientation and gender identity.” Lastly it creates an Office for Global Women’s Issues, on the heels of Sec. of State Clinton’s statement that “we are now an administration that will protect the rights of women, including their rights to reproductive health care” and “reproductive health includes access to abortion.” There are serious concerns that this office will be used to promote the legalization of abortion abroad and seek to overturn pro-life laws in other countries.

Next week Rep. Louise Slaughter (D-N.Y.) will be dropping a House resolution focusing on George Tiller, the infamous late term abortionist who was murdered last week. While Mr. Tiller’s death was a tragedy, how he chose to make his living was not something to be celebrated.

Yesterday Rep. Michele Bachmann (R-MN) introduced the Taxpayer Protection and Anti-Fraud Act, a bill to prohibit organizations indicted for violations of state or federal election laws from receiving federal funds through programs of the Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD). This is to address the corruption surrounding the group ACORN. A study conducted by the Office of the House Republican Leader revealed that ACORN has received more than $53 million in federal funds from a variety of programs administered by HUD. This amount does not reflect the millions more ACORN has received in federal block grant funds awarded to state and local agencies which passed them on to ACORN.

Nominations
Yesterday the Judiciary Committee voted 12-7 along straight party lines to recommend Senate confirmation of David Hamilton, a nominee for the U.S. Court of Appeals for the 7th Circuit. Andre Davis, a nominee for the 4th Circuit, was approved 16 to 3, picking up support from four Republicans. During the committee hearing a healthy debate on the role of “empathy” in judging was put forth.
